Behavior Assessment Pro

Behavior Assessment Pro (BAP) is an iPhone app that produces a nicely formatted PDF document based upon answers to a 3-part questionnaire. As the developer states in the app's description, "The information obtained can be used to guide direct observations, systematic manipulations, behavior support plan development or for IEP purposes."

IEP is Individualized Educational Program, of course. If you're interested in reading this review then chances are pretty good that you're familiar with that lovely document and the seemingly endless meetings required to get a decent IEP in place.

Behavior Assessment Pro could be a very good app to have installed on your iPhone, especially if you're a behavioralist. It has the ability to cough up a report based on multiple behaviors and it can also store results for multiple questionnaires filled out by multiple 'informants.' Informant is the title this app gives to the person who is informing, or answering questions, about a child.

I find this app to be very simple to use, with an intuitive interface. Each question is plainly stated. Inputting a new child (or individual) is straight forward. And, with this three part questionnaire, your follow up questions for section 2 and 3 are based upon your answers to the questions in section 1. So it sorta has a little built-in intelligence. The final report contains a graph labeled "Calculated Scores". As an ignorant parent, I have no clue what that graph is telling me.

While using this iPhone app to pull up a report based on a questionnaire I had previously filled out, occasionally the app shut down and sent me back to the iTouch home screen. When I attempted to fill out a new questionnaire about another behavior it kicked me out again. This was a bit frustrating and may be something of concern. I'd guess it's indicative of a bug in the code, but there is always the possibility that it's my iPod causing the trouble since I'm using only an 8 gig 3rd generation iPod Touch with iOS 4.2. I've heard the smallest iTouch is a little weaker in the processor and/or memory department.

The comprehensive reports produced by Behavior Assessment Pro are PDF's that can be password protected and even emailed. Naturally, in order to take advantage of those features you need to have an email account set up on your iPhone.

Version 1.0 of Behavior Assessment Pro is a pretty sweet little iPhone app. I could see how this could be especially handy for professionals, but also for parents who are looking to be prepared at little Jimmy's next IEP.
