IEP Checklist

The first thing you should know is that the developer of IEP Checklist has not updated this app in a very long time. So it may not be compatible with the latest iOS on your device. That's a big problem.

Ever forget to discuss something important at your kid's IEP Meeting? I have. And then I bought an iPod Touch. One of the first apps I got was IEP Checklist. It's free and it's developed by PEATC, a parent center in Virginia. PEATC is the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center. They're only funded to assist parents in the state of Virginia, but with this app they're helping parents throughout the US.

A fantastic app for any parent who has a child on an IEP (Individualized Education Program) and owns an iTouch or iPhone, IEP Checklist is invaluable. I use this app at my son's IEPs. It gives you categories of the IEP along with snippets from IDEA that apply to each area. It also gives space for typing in little notes and it can store info on multiple children. And if you're looking for some way to record the meeting, look no further - IEP Checklist allows for audio recording right within the app! What about video? Well, the IDEA doesn't specify that you can video record an IEP Meeting. It only gives you the right to audio record.

Scenario; Prior to your child's IEP Meeting you use IEP Checklist and type in all kinds of stuff in many different categories. This is stuff you want discussed at the meeting and you'd like to get this info to the district ahead of time so they can be prepared. How do you get this info to the school district once you typed it all in the app? Luckily, there's a built in way to email it. And IEP Checklist even puts it in pdf format and attaches it to your email. Wow! It's hard to believe this app is out there free for you to download and use. PEATC cares!

If the full text of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was included within this app I think that would really polish off IEP Checklist. As it is, they've included a link to IDEA.ed.gov, but finding the text of the IDEA is a little difficult. And if you don't have a wi-fi connection (or 3G service) in the meeting that link is useless. Even so, IDEA.ed.gov is not optimized for mobile devices and Part C of the site is not constructed yet. Part C is that portion of the law that contains special education regulations for children birth through 2.99999999 years of age. However, if your child is under age 3 they aren't yet on an IEP anyhow.

If you have a child with autism and an iPhone get IEP Checklist. You'll be glad you did.
