SLP Field Kit is the premiere speech app for iPhone and iPad (and, of course, the iPod Touch). It's not just a pack of digital flash cards. No, it's far more than that. By the way, SLP stands for Speech and Language Pathology (or Pathologist). This app brings a nice group of speech tools to your fingertips, whether you're a parent or a speech pathologist.
SLP Field Kit focuses on consonants, not vowels. In its own words the main purpose of SLP Field Kit "is to aid the clinician in the field with testing and building phonemic awareness and auditory discrimination. It contains 361 audio word cards, which are spoken words illustrated by photographs and drawing along with the text of the words. It uses various groupings of the word cards in 8 progressively difficult activities to build and to test phonemic awareness." As you read there are eight different activities. Those activities are "Practice: Review the Words", "Which Phoneme Is In the Word?", "Which Word Contains the Phoneme?", Is the Phoneme at Beginning, Middle, or End?", "Choose Similar Word By Hearing the Word", "Which Phoneme Is In Both Words?", "Which Similar Word Contains the Phoneme?", and "Flipbook for Your Activity".
In case you don't know, Phoneme (foh-neem) is another word for sound. And the last activity named above, "Flipbook for Your Activity", is essentially flashcards. I mention it not as a downfall, but to note that this "Flipbook" is basically what you get in other speech apps' entirety. So, not only are you getting the flashcards that most other speech apps are built around, you're getting so much more! Each of the activities are intriguing and each one has a button you can press to hear the sound or the whole word depending on which is applicable for the mode you're using. You can also email the scores from within the app, and for you SLP's out there, you can email your entire client list too. For privacy, the list of clients is not made readily visible.
If you'd like, you can set SLP Field Kit to show the International Phonetic Alphabet. Being a parent, I find that to be awkward because I don't understand the International Phonetic Alphabet. Speech therapists may prefer it though. And it's certainly nice to have that option!
Also if you're confused about how to use SLP Field Kit, don't worry. The developer has wisely included instruction on how to use it built right into the app... probably for us parents. Thank you!
