  • Parent Autism Blog

  • Welcome to the parent autism blog at Autism Epicenter. This is an online journal written directly by parents of children with ASD. We'll share the triumphs and challenges as well as anything else that comes to our minds as related to Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

    Three parents post here:

    - Shane
Autism Dad and the man behind Autism Epicenter. His son was born in 2002 and diagnosed in 2004 with classic autism.

    - Sherri
Mother of "Sir Dantes". He was born in 2007 and diagnosed in 2009. "Ms. Maxie" is her typical daughter (doesn't have autism). Sherri works full time and blogs because she finds it to be therapeutic.

    - Karen
Autism mom, founder of Successful Living with Autism through Training and Education (SLATE). Her daughter, Katie, was born in 1992 and diagnosed with autism in 1995.

Eyeopening on something I basically never gave a thought to. The idea of lets start a foundation so we can collect a paycheck, oh, and get the word out that there is a need for help, but we give no help...astounding. And frustrating. Is there some easy way of checking which ones actually provide more than information?

As far as immediate, direct help; I believe the local sources are the best. The problem is that their funds are very limited. Usually the best place to start looking is either the public schools or support groups. The national foundations...it seems to me you have to make a request for a grant. To request a grant, usually, you have to be affiliated with a non-profit doing research or providing services on a national/ state level. Again, if you are just one of the "regular" people out there, you are competing (or waiting) along with a long line of other's needing assistance. If you wish to start a non-profit, I believe there is a host of federal and state regulations you have to comply with to get started.

Apply for grants. They are out there and with a grant you would have the money to start a walk and help people in your area with the money.

the main problem with applying for grants is that (1) the lines are long; and (2) the money is in short supply due to the demand and the cuts to budgets; and (3) usually the paperwork is tied up in a lot of government red tape. but, it is always worth a shot.
